Platinum chain lid implants

Implantation of weights in the upper eyelid using gold implants has been an established procedure since 1958, however post-operative complications were not uncommon and brought to light the need for a flexible lid implant. The Berghaus/Schrom lid chain, developed by SPIGGLE & THEIS, is a flexible implant made of platinum, enabling optimum pre-tarsal alignment and long-term flexibility.

Flexible lid implants

Lid chains can be adapted perfectly to the anatomy of the eye, helping to prevent postsurgical complications and significantly improving patient quality of life. They have very good tissue compatibility and excellent cosmetic results, resulting in high patient satisfaction. Lid chains are completely reversible without complications and can be combined with other surgical eyelid corrective procedures.

Berghaus /Schrom lid chain

Complete closure of the lid

The Berghaus/Schrom lid chain is an implant which restores dynamic closure of the eye in cases of Lagophthalmus, resulting from facial paralysis. The implants have the design of a chain to smoothly adapt to the form of the tarsus. The pre-drilled holes are for easier fixation.

The Berghaus/Schrom lid chain is manufactured from platinum and iridium, which has many advantages over the commonly used gold implants, particularly when considering weight distribution and biocompatibility. The combination of the materials and the chain form is reflected in its above-average performance results and lower rate of complications.

MR conditional

Safe with MRI & CT scans

Non-clinical testing has demonstrated that the lid chains can be scanned safely under specific scanning conditions. 

To reach optimal scan images, it may be necessary to adjust the MR display parameters to the presence of the implant, and a CT scan should be considered beforehand to rule out possible dislocation of the prosthesis prior to an MRI examination.

Test weights

Pre-operative fitting

Weights are offered from 0.6g to 2.0g in 0.2g increments. The appropriate weight is determined by pre-operative fitting. For this purpose, test weights are used, which are glued to the upper lid to determine a sufficient lid closure. The test weights are made of stainless steel, as they are not for implantation, and are reusable.
